Dr. Zoidberg

This kind of shoot is way outside of what I normally do, although I am sort of changing what I normally do but not to this extreme and that's another conversation. I chose to specifically do this shoot because of the prosthetic I make, The Flayer. The intention of The Flayer was to create a simple Mind Flayer prosthetic, but upon seeing it I realized there was a very decent comparison to Dr. Zoidberg.

I usually get comments comparing my designs to other existing things (most of the time the comparisons are a massive stretch though), in this case I had to admit there was pretty obvious comparison to be made. So I decided that this was something I had to do just to see how it would work.

The idea sat on the shelf for a couple years, I needed to make and collect all the parts needed, eventually it happened and I was able to get this turned out. It was a slightly rushed shoot, but overall I am really happy with how it turned out.

The Flayer is also one of my best selling pieces and despite my limited intention with the design, I'm really glad to see it's more versatile than I had planned. And, as a side note, I do have plans to for a much more elaborate Flayer prosthetic - this one will remain, there'll just be two versions.

Why not Zoidberg?

Cobalt Skaarl

I realize now that this makeup ended up sort of like another I did a couple years ago, but after 200+ Demons that's bound to happen - the prosthetics were all different at least, just the colours that are sort of the same - but it's interesting just how different it still looks from that other one (which I won't picture, so you'll have to figure it out for yourself).

It's also the first shoot I've done with the new Skaarl prosthetic (using an epoxy mould) and I'm pretty impressed with how well it went on and how seamless it came out without really trying. I normally do a lot of work cleaning up the seams for these shoots (I don't claim to be a great makeup artist, I do this for fun), but I had very little to do with this one. Had I actually taken the time during application this one could've been absolutely perfectly applied.

The Witch

This is outside what I normally do, I've always said I don't do old age makeup, witches, skulls or clowns - and for the most part I will never do most of them, at least not for my own purposes, photo shoots or to sell on my site. However, I recently watched Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters again and I was reminded how awesome, and unique, a lot of the witch makeups looked and was inspired to do one of my own.

I didn't stray too far from the character of Muriel, the main evil Witch played by Famke Janssen. i wanted to keep it simple and pretty basic, so the overall form is just an exaggerated face, then added some cracks in it.

Something I haven't done in ages is to really try to do a clean makeup. I'll admit, I've been pretty sloppy with a lot of my makeup job in the last while, relying heavily on photoshop to clean them up. For me the point isn't about doing a camera ready makeup, but creating the final images, so I don't feel like I'm cheating just being efficient with my time.

This time I felt since it was potentially so simple, I'd actually make the effort to make it as camera ready as possible, and with the except of one seam along the left side of the mouth, it was nearly flawless - and with more effort would have been perfect. So I'm glad to know I haven't completely lost my ability to do makeup properly.

The piece used will be available for sale soon.
